Producer Profile

Albert Mann

Alsace, France

Wettolsheim, Haut-Rhin Alsace, France Domaine Albert Mann is the product of the combined efforts of the Mann and Barhelmé families - two prominent winemaking families of Alsace. The Manns have been winegrowers since the start of the 17th century and Barthelmé, since 1654. Today, brothers, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, along with their winves, Marie-Claire and Marie-Thérèse manage the historic family estate. The goal of the family estate is to producer wine in harmony with nature. The Barthelmés believe that wine is the memory of the grape and capable of transmitting the taste of the earth. Since 2000, the estate has been organically certified by Ecocert; the family has been practicing biodynamic viticulture since 1997. Biodynamic practices are labor intensive, but they feel the effort helps bring about the resulting wine’s pure reflection of terroir and its own identity. The Domaine currently exploits 21 hectares of vines, split into 100 or so plots, which are tended like individual gardens with patience and a total respect for the benefits nature bestows on them. The family has five Grand Cru vineyards, two lieux-dit and one Monopole in the Bas-Rhin, or Lower Rhine region. The family is justifiably proud of Alsatian varieites, noble Riesling, Pinot Blanc Auxerrois, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and some Pinot Noir and Muscat.
